Interesting post. I think sometimes churches striving for excellence can also go a little too far. I’ve been to plenty of church services that made me cringe because they seemed “too good”. I didn’t feel included in the service…their “made for TV” professionalism made me feel more like a spectator than an active worshiper.

Yet one of the most beautiful services I’ve ever been to was at John Wesley’s church in England. While they do get lots of visitors because of their church’s heritage, they haven’t expanded the infrastructure to an enormous degree or done quality checks on their members. Their choir was about average with the occasional person singing out of tune, but it was absolutely beautiful – because they were worshiping with whole hearts. They invited me and my friends to come to a potluck afterward…offered to open up their museum and take us on a historical tour, even though they hadn’t planned to have those services available. They were just a small, humble, and totally in love with God type of community. It was so refreshing!
