exercising while working

My blood sugar the last few weeks has been higher than usual and seems to be heading towards pre-diabetes. My husband and I are unable to walk at night now due to rain or cold. So I got desperate and tried something new — a mini elliptical machine. And I can use it while working!

I read about a guy who treadmilled while working on his computer and wondered if I could do something similar, since I have to work at my computer so much. So I got this Stamina 55-1610 InMotion E1000 Elliptical Trainer on Amazon.

What’s cool is now I can work on my computer and exercise on this. What is the verb for exercising on an elliptical? Ellipticizing?

I take little steps because it is not a big machine. But if I keep going at it, I do work up a sweat!

The computer’s actually a little closer so it’s a bit more ergonomic. I had to rearrange my desk to make this work. In normal mode, my computer is plugged into another monitor and I can sit and work.

The little shelf on the left was from IKEA for $15. (I can’t seem to find it online.) I used to have stuff on top too but removed it and just use the lower shelf. Then when I want to exercise, all I do is move the shelf to the edge of my desk and put my computer on top. (You can see my husband’s head peeking out on the other side where his desk is.)

Last night I was ellipticizing for 2 hours and didn’t even notice! And it’s made a huge difference.

The one hour mark is supposed to be blood glucose level of 140 or lower. Lately after meals it’s been 150+, once even hitting 260 something.

Last night after dinner and ellipticizing 1 hour, it was 85.

Today I ate breakfast of oatmeal, which recently ends up at 150+. Today after 1 hour of exercise it was 84.

Fasting sugars are supposed to be under 100. Lately it has been 100+, around 110. Today it was 100, and I ate a little bit of cookie last night, which usually makes it much higher. Wow! What a difference!

And meanwhile today I sent out 80+ emails and did a ton of other work as well. 🙂

I’m pretty happy to jump on this thing while I work because I can get stuff done, be with my family, and burn blood sugar at the same time!

    Get a second external monitor so that you can look at it at eye-level for even better ergonomics!

    Now if only I could figure out a way to hook up a generator to your machine — you could recharge your iPhone at the same time (since I know how you love to multi-task 🙂 )
