Random learning topics

Since I have a bad memory, I forgot that one of my goals was to blog different things I’m learning. Of course I instantly forgot I was going to do that.

But since I’ve finally remember, here’s just a short list of random topics I learned about this week.

I liked to read and stumble across various blogs, magazines, and books. It’s so interesting learning all sorts of things!

Bible (from personal Bible study)

Reading through the Samuels/Kings has been so much fun with my wide-margin Bible. I am jotting down all sorts of things I never noticed before.

  • Joab, Abishai and Asahel (men in David’s army) were called “Sons of Zeruiah.” All this time I thought Zeruiah was their father. But actually, it was their mother! And she was David’s sister! No wonder David put up with them — they were his nephews!
  • Solomon’s temple was about the size of our worship center. (Gym size)
  • God made a promise to Solomon after he already went ahead and married Pharoah’s daughter. Just shows God’s grace that he promised all that wisdom to Solomon even though he had already gone ahead and done something that was against what God wanted.
  • Many more things… too much to put here. I like seeing those red marks in the margin!

Crease Patterns (from reading blogs)

I have always been amazed by people who make original out of single sheets of paper — without cutting and without gluing! Like this one that I saw on the website Toxel:

This one and many others are made by Shuki Tako.

His site kept saying something called “CP.” I wondered what it was so I looked it up and it is a crease pattern. It is a pattern that orgamiists (is that such a word?) follow to create their works of art. For example, want to make this flying stick bug?

No problem, here you go! Just follow this.

Piece of cake, right? Looks just like directions to make a stick bug to me…

For more crease patterns and amazing origami, see this site.

Murder (from Wikipedia)

The other day Albert was joking with Megan on how to respond to guys who might want to ask her on a date. He said, “Just tell him, ‘Oh I’m sorry; I’m not free that day because my dad is coming home from Folsom Prison.”

This led to a conversation on crime and capital punishment and googling to learn more. We learned that California does have capital punishment, the different degrees of murder, the difference between murder and manslaughter, and what crimes are punishable by capital punishment. Not the type of topic we ever discuss but it was kind of a random evening.

When I think of how the wages of sin is death, I’m thankful for Jesus’ price on the cross being paid for mine so that I don’t have to go through future punishment!

LEDs (from Fast Company magazine)

I learned how LED lightbulbs are made. It’s always bothered me that LED Christmas lights are an ugly blue and I wondered why they didn’t tint them yellow. Apparently, to do that requires rare earth metals from China — expensive.

LED light bulbs really are not round at all. They are flat. They just make them lightbulb shape because they have to screw into the lamp. And anyway, people would think flat lightbulbs are weird.

That’s just a sample of the random things I learn about all the time. Learning is so much fun! I’m glad God gave us brains to learn!

Angela, how I love how you think! Your random thoughts can be my never-voiced-never-answered thoughts. I always learn something new from you! But I have to say that I cannot answer Albert’s physics questions..they are too way over my head! Please post the answer key and how-to get the answers. Loved the cartoons though!
